Billy...my friend Amanda can't decide what's better--her new mink coat or her new BillyStiX SpiralStiX rod!

Capt. Tommy Thompson, Steinhatchee, FL

Dear Sir,
I am writing you because I am homeless. The reason Im homeless is because I spent all my money trying to get my family back from evil pirates. They are very serious about their demands. They will only release my loving family with delivery of a Billystix SpiralStix "Lite" rod. Thank heavens above that I found this contest while surfing the net at our local library. I have inclosed a photo to show you that Im not making this up. Also I smell very bad.

Thank you

As some of you remember Billy held a contest a few months ago, the subject of the contest being, "why I need a BILLYSTIX custom rod. I entered the contest with the story of my daughter who was born 4 months premature. I didn't end up winning the contest, but Billy was kind enough to contact me and build me a rod anyway. I received the rod in the mail shortly after that and let me just say it's awesome! First off, the attention to detail in packing and shipping the rod blew me away. I think I spent 20 minutes carefully cutting all the packaging away from the rod. I just recently got to go fishing and used the rod for the first time. This was the first time I had used a spiral wrapped rod but I can guarantee that it won't be the last! Billy, thanks for the great service, wonderful gesture, and for building me a quality custom rod. BILLYSTIX is a great company and I definitely plan on ordering additional rods in the future. Thanks again Billy!

Melissaa52 with a beautiful Lake Conroe, Texas palmetto(hybrid)bass she caught on a billystix spiral wrapped redfish rod Billy built me several years ago. Over the years this spiral stix has been put to the test on 30 + pounds of mean lean fighting machines from offshore Gulf Of Mexico jacks to bull reds along the Galveston jetties to monster catfish on Lake Conroe. I'm pleased to say the rod has performed beyond my expectations. The spiral wrap really tames the torquing these big bruisers can put on a rod.

As a trout fisherman and large game fisherman I am very picky to my weapon
of choice for putting some lips to steel. I got my Billy Stix rod today and
was impressed with the detail he puts into his work. I have load tested the
rod and nowhere does the line touch the ripper guide or the spiral wrap one
bit. This is a big plus to find the true 'bone" in your rod and flex.

Thanks Billy Stix for your time and effort in my quest to have good
equipment for my trout. If any of you are considering looking into having
something built this is the guy to if you looking for someone that listens
to what YOU want built.

I told the guy what to build and my specifications and right out of the tube
came what I asked for. I'm not in no way saying he has the best rods but for
a serious fisherman I demand only the best hopefully many trout will shake
their head to this staff.

Billy, Hey,

I just wanted to say thank you again for the rod...Totally
Different from anything I have ever held. This thing is amazing to fish
with. I hooked into a nice flounder this past weekend and really got to feel
the action of the rod in my hand. You have outdone my expectations and I
cannot thank you enough for your efforts. I am saving my pennies so that I
can get another one of these masterpieces as soon as possible. I cannot wait
to get hooked up on one of these Alabama Bronzebacks and get the goody out
of this thing.

Billy, you truly are a master craftsman, and I look forward to loading my
fishing arsenal with BillyStix Rods.

Thanks Again and please stay in touch with our group. We are adding new
members daily, so keep posting and I'll keep pushing em' to your website!

Sincerely,

I have on of these beautiful rods and really enjoy it. I had to christen it with two(2) 24" reds when I got it. How do you tame a redfish in Texas waters?...you beat then with your billystix... I bought mine 2 years ago and have been getting some really good fish with it since. Heck I even won flounder tourney with it last year on Matty bay. Very proud of it-hey 2coolers fisheremen you owe it to yourself to get your hands on one. Take it from a man who owns one and loving evry munite of it. No fish is safe when I fish with it-good reel/rod setup is all it take to get you hook on a billystix.

All I can say is WOW!!! STIX you are DEFINATELY DA MAN!!!!

Got mine today and got it wet today too. Christened it with a few smallish white trouts and a schooler speck, not anything huge and braggable, but fish all the same. Can't wait to hook into something bigger.

From the first cast, I knew what I had been missing for all of these years, honestly. Never had a rod that you could feel every nibble right in the palm of your hand...but now I do! This thing is amazing for working a light weight jig, and just as efficient with 3/8oz on the line.
And beautiful??? Daaammmmnnnnn

Guys....save up change...pawn the dog...wash cars...whatever you need to do, but you have got to put one of these rods in your fishing equipment invantory. Y'all can BET I'm gonna be tryin to win one of the tourney rods in May!
Billy, THANK YOU! I knew it would be a bad a$$, but you far exceeded my expectations. As soon as I have the bucks saved up...you will definitely be receiving an order from me!!

I received my new BillyStix SpiralStix Rod yesterday and all I can say is WOW. For anyone not familiar with these rods you are missing out. Everyone needs to look, hold, and feel one of these.
Now, why do I need to win another, so I can rig one with a topwater and one with a soft plastic for convenience.(not meant to sound greedy)
My first time to buy sight unseen plus worry about shipping but their packing is incredible and showed up a day early.
Yea Billy, you passed the test!!

One thing about it, whether Billy would grace me with a freebie or not, like Tombo said, if you don't win one, buy one. I bought one for a friend for Christmas 2006, and shortly thereafter talked my wife into letting me get one of my own: He has since gone on to buy a second, and I wish I could drop the money to do it again before another year of fishing: other priorities call, however. Meanwhile, the one I've got has really opened my eyes to just what could be done with a rod: I had gone for years before with Academy All stars and Castaways as my "go-to" rods: I took the reel directly off of an All-star and put it on my new Billystix, and I was stunned at the difference: All of a sudden, top dogs started landing within a foot of where I wanted them instead of within a fifteen-yard circle of the same target, I picked up an instant ten to twenty yards on each long cast, and backlashes on casts into hard winds all but became a thing of the past. Don't ask me how all that works, it just does. Meanwhile, I had "feel" on a rod that I never knew could exist: I felt like I could check a trout's cholesterol level through the line, instead of just feeling like I was horsing in a good-sized shoe that turned into a decent trout once it was in the boat. Really, one way or another, if you aren't a winner here, do whatever you can to put this on the top of your fishing-equipment priority list: Have a yak and are saving up for a paddle? Heck with propulsion: get a Billystix first.

We got the rod and damn Billy you do damn fine work. I will be on the water
tomorrow with it.

I am a picky SOB when it comes to rods and you pleased me just fine.

Makes me wonder I was getting ripped from the rest of the guys that build
for me. I make my living fishing and this is one fine weapon. I am still
awaiting an email from Russo to get your banner up. He lives in New York and
touring with his band but will be taken care of.

JUST A QUICK NOTE TO TELL YOU THAT YOU HAVE THE FINEST ROD I'VE EVER USED.  I BOUGHT 2 ( A 6.6 LIGHT  AND A 8' MED ) AT A CHARITY AUCTION THAT SOME FRIENDS OF MINE WERE HAVING FOR A LITTLE BOY WITH CANCER.  OF COURSE PRICE WAS NOT THE ISSUE HERE BUT I WENT TO GALVESTON BAY THE NEXT DAY.  THE MOST IMPRESSIVE THING WAS THAT I COULD NOT BACKLASH MY REELS.  THATS SAYING SOMETHING FOR ME.  AGAIN, A GREAT ROD.  I'M TELLING EVERYONE I KNOW!!!

Hi Billy, I wanted to tell you how great the rod looks that you built for me. It more than met my expectations of what I thought the rod would look like. It truly is a work of art. I wish I could go try it out this week but since it's a Christmas present I will just have to wait for a while. Thank's again for a beautiful job, you are truly a talented person.

Thanks, Gary Norrid

Hey Billystix, I broke in my new rod!
Went to Trinity bay this weekend and the fishin was hot. Fished with Kim, Bill, Glen, and Sandy. The new rod fishes and casts great. Let the other guys try it out and they liked it also

Me and Boogey got a little bored this afternoon and decided to take a look at a little creek that runs near our house. The scouting mission was as fun as it gets but we decided it wasn't where we wanted to wet out lines today. We walked back to our place and my neighbor met us in the drive and asked if CJ wanted to catch some catfish in his pond. I probably don't have to even tell you what her reply was. I rigged "her" monogrammed BillyStiX up and away we went. I think she takes after Cassaundra. She hadn't had her "secret" bait in the water any more than a minute and a half when the fight was on and a very respectable cat was on the bank. This guy took drag 3 times before coming to hand! Here's a picture of the creek we opted not to fish and another of Boogey and one of the two cats she landed before it got chilly (and hungry) outside. I was really proud of her when she decided (on her own) to release both fish to fight again another day. Daddy's girl? You betcha!

AN INTERESTING EXCHANGE:

Billy, well my custom rod arrived today and boy was I surprised. I opened from the top end and found the tip eye bent no big deal I straightened it out. The further I got things were looking pretty good. I finally got the whole rod unwrapped and took off the attached PVC pipe (good idea) and to my dismay there was something else wrong the eyes didn't line up. The first 2 eyes from the rod handle were lined up then it was like someone thought this was a spinning rod the rest of the eyes were on the bottom side. Unfortunately I did not want a two design rod. I don't know what happened and really don't care I just would like the problem corrected. I really don't want this rod back because now you will have to cut the eyes off and move them to the top side. Also I don't know much about custom rods but it looked like this rod was broke and then pieced back together, there's allot of glue or resin build up where the eyes were turned to the bottom. Trust me this time I am not in a rush I just want a good custom rod like your web site talks about I believe this was a honest mistake. Please if you E-Mail back E-mail me at *****  also please call me tomorrow at ***-***-****. I would like to know what possibly went wrong. I am sending the rod back tomorrow via mail. Thanks

Mark Wayne Henke

AFTER MARK WOKE UP!:

Billy, I know you did not try to scam me and I apologize if I came across that way. I am German and square on 4 sides so it takes awhile to think things out. As I was laying in bed last night about 11:00pm our time it hit me that it would make perfect since to spiral the rod and have the eyes offset. After allot of thought it makes since. And by the way you did a beautiful job and I am looking forward to catching my first fish on the new rod. I am probably going to team this rod up with a Johnny Morris Elite reel excellent combination. Thanks again for a great job and sorry for the confusion on my part. The rod was put back in the boat this morning where it belongs. Thank You Mark Wayne Henke

P.S. I will be back in touch soon I would like to have another custom rod built for my brother in-law. Just as soon as I can rake up a few more clams from the backyard. Also this rod will be on display to my friends at Bass Pro tomorrow night!

..and FROM BILLY:

OH SHI!!! THATS GREAT

I MUST SAY I HAVE HAD MANY GUYS CONFRONT ME IN A CONFUSED MANNER ABOUT THE ROD ONCE THEY GET IT OR ONCE THEY SEE SOMEONE ELSE'S SPIRAL, BUT I MUST SAY YOURS BROUGHT ONE OF THE BIGGEST GRINS I HAVE HAD DUE TO THE SPIRAL IN MANY MOONS THANKS FOR THE UPLIFT

AND WITH YOUR PERMISSION I WOULD LIKE TO SHOW IT TO SOME FRIENDS ON THE MESSAGE BOARD LESS YOUR NAME OF COURSE IF YOU DONT MIND ALSO WOULD LIKE TO PUT IT ON MY WEBSITE  TRULY A UPLIFT FOR ME, I JUST DID NOT WANT TO UPSET A CUSTOMER AS I VALUE MY CLIENT'S AS MUCH AS I VALUE MY WORK, THAT IS WHY WHEN I BUILD I FEEL I MUST BUILD ONE ROD AND ONE ROD ONLY IT'S LIKE THE ROD THAT I AM CURRENTLY BUILDING IS MY FIRST AND MY LAST, IT MUST BE AN ORIGINIAL THAT IS WHY I NEVER USE ANY TYPE MACHINE YOU NOW HAVE THE ONLY CUSTOM BUILT BILLYSTIX SPIRAL THAT YOU HAVE THAT IS BUILT ON THIS PLANET AND THERE WILL NEVER BE ANOTHER"ONE OF A KIND"

THANKS FOR BEING WHO YOU ARE ANOTHER ONE OF A KIND THEY ARE THE BEST ONES.

MARK GETS THE FINAL WORD:

Billy, yes please show it to your friends and remember it just takes us Germans a little longer to think things out.

GOD BLESS and keep up the excellent workmanship.

MANY MANY BIG FISH

We got the Billystix on Saturday… He loves it… he is very happy …. We went to bass pro and picked out a cool looking real… that has every color of the rainbow in it.. he is very, very ,  happy…..    You do great work!  Thank you again, MeLisa Pruett

As an outdoor writer and long-term inshore fisherman, I've managed to collect somewhere in the neighborhood of fifty inshore rods. While I try and rotate them, there is one that gets used 90% of the time. My favorite fishing is topwater fishing in very shallow water. I need a long rod, preferable 8' in length, but light enough to allow me to cast all day. The length is necessary to provide long casts, because fish in shallow water are easily spooked. My 8' Billystix rod matched with a Van Staal 100G reel and 10 pound Power Pro is my first choice every time I fish. In fact, I've won and placed in a number of tournaments with fish caught using this rod. While I enjoy the decorations on custom rods, to me the value of a rod is whether it meets my needs, and my Billystix rod is the one that gets used day after day. In fact, I've now decided to have Billy put  new high-tech guides on the rod, and I hate to give it up for even one trip. I strongly recommend a custom-made Billystix rod for the highest level of inshore fishing.

Billy,

Sara and I spent the day recently working on some new photos for a Florida Sportsman story I'm writing. The bite at Steinhatachee has been unbelievable this fall and I always count on my BillyStiX rods to get these frisky ones to the boat.

Here is a BillyStiX rod, Jeremy using it, made for trout fishing, gulp! That's right, I said it... trout fishing. It is engaged to a hefty cobia. I like to abuse my stuff, but it worked like a charm......

Congrats, are in order first and foremost......That's right Fred, the rods are tough. If you want to see how incredibly tough they are I can show you the Billystix in action with some real fish.....no offense Freddy. All kidding aside, they are all that I fish with anymore.....Here you go.

Here is another one of my custom made tarpon stix battling a five and a half foot shark.......look at the line running smoothly through the guides, never rubbing the rod.......

Billy,

My little 5-footer is a hoot!! I tagged a couple of small (2-lb) bass in some rapids out on the Nueces River Saturday and the fight was on!! Then yesterday I caught 10 (1-lb to 3-lb) at my golf course in about 20-minutes. Caught all of them on an 1/8 ounce white Rooster Tail lure.

The sensitivity of the rod is phenominal and the cast ease is second to none.

A friend of mine, John Helums, will probably be getting w/ you about  7' worm rod... he tried my cousin's 6-footer this past weekend and was duly impressed.

I'll let you know how she performed out west after next months trip to the Nueces.

Ya done good!!!

Mr. Stix,  8/7/2007

I spoke to my Aunt last night and she said my Uncle has gone crazy over the rod. She said he has called all of his fishing buddies and has taken it to several of the neighbors houses to show it off.She added that he went to Walmart to buy a reel and decided that none of the “cheap” reels were good enough for his new rod. So, today he plans on going to a local Shop to purchase a more “expensive” reel for his rod. I had called him a few weeks back and made up a story about a friend wanting to start Crappie fishing to get a feel for what he liked in a rod. Little did he know I was actually collecting information to give to you. My Uncle actually told me that any “cheap rod and reel from Walmart” would do for Crappie fishing… Sir, I do believe you have changed his point of view on Rods. You have done it again and guess what? When I spoke to him yesterday, he said his “Name was on The Rod”, Imagine that???? He was extremely excited…..You have received a lot of advertisement in just one day…

Thanks A Million,

Russ

Hey, guy...

sorry about the delay but i have been busy fishing with my new rod !! MAN  i caught  some fish 9 specks . Hookd a fish that started peelin line like crazy ,i let it run for a bit but line was getting low so i put the brakes on him that's when i felt the difference from my rod and ordinary rods ,the rod did all the work i was enjoying it , i started to gain ground on him but he made one last run and the knot on the swivel slipped . So to say the big one got away ! But i was not upset i wanted to see what my rod would do and it did a awsome job i fished with my rod for 7hrs throwing plastic the whole time and i did not even get tired!!.. My two buddies were taking beer breaks every few hours, its worth every  penny. Anyway i can go on and on bout my billystix so i will end it by saying this if you can afford to buy one buy it , and you will find out what all the hype is , and you too will want to buy another just like i am.  remember break their necks !!!!!

Billy,

I just got back from Cape Coral about a week and a half ago, and just had to share this with you.

I chartered a full day trip with Cap'n Sam Arcure (Team Arcure in the FLW Redfish tour).  I was primarily looking for snook, and large snook, at that.

I had with me my custom made 7' BillyStix spinning rod (b'day present from my wife) with a 5000 Stradic that balances it perfectly.  I you remember, I wanted to cast light lures, in the wind, but still have enough backbone to handle redfish.

We delayed my trip by one day because it would have been the third day of a nor'easter (25-30 kt winds).  Instead, we went on the fourth day of a four day nor'easter!  At least the wind laid to about 20 knots.

Fishing the grass flats around Pine Island, we saw many very large snook and many more nice snook as well.  All of them had one common problem:  Lockjaw.

I fished a sand bed just off a small mangrove island with a live shrimp on a jig head and caught a 26.75" red.  Threw back and caught another.  After the third one out of the same hole,  Cap'n Sam says "Something's wrong.  I don't hear any drag and it should be screaming with these fish."

About that time, I hooked another and handed him the rod.  "You catch this one and you'll see why," sez I.  About 10 seconds into the fight, I hear "Damn!  The rod's doing all the work!"  After the release of a beautiful slot red, I explained to him that this was custom made by a Master named Billy McDaniel in Gainesville.  I encouraged him to cast with it several times and was mightily impressed that it had perfect tip action for casting and still the balanced strength to handle strong fish.

"If you don't mind me asking," sez he, "how much did this rod cost?"  "How much would you pay for it?", sez I.  "Not over $450", sez he, but I think that was just to have an out if I ended up telling him it was a $750 rod.  "Well", sez I, "I paid $175 for it about three years ago."  "Damnation", sez he, "it's in great shape for that age.  How do I get in touch with Mr. McDaniel?"

"First", sez I, "you gotta call him Billy, and second, here's his card."

I then proceeded to catch 7 more reds from the same spot (all in the slot) and lose three others.

Billy, this guy is a very good fisherman and a damn fine charter captain (he stayed over a hour longer than the trip was supposed to be for, just trying to put me on my first snook.  Worked his ass off, too.

I hope he calls you because I know he'll be glad he did.  I sure am.  Just wanted to thank you for the finest rod I have ever had in my hands.  Attached are a few pics of some of the reds.

My warmest regards,

Lee Norton

My favorite rod - BillyStix Spiral Stix

I know that a lot of you guys already own custom rods from Billy (BillyStix Custom Rods), but I haven't really ever posted my thoughts on mine.

I bought one earlier this year (around February I think) and have just in the last few months really gotten some good fishing time with it in the bay. I got the 6'9" spiral stix rod and it fits me perfectly. Very light, perfectly balanced, and I've never felt more in control of a fish.

1st...let me say that this rod is beautiful. Everyone that sees it comments on how unique it is, and how impressed they are at the design work.

2nd (and most importantly)...the action of this rod is AWESOME. It is very sensitive and I can feel more than any other rod I have used. I let my fath-in-law use it and he loved it. He didn't want to give it back...but I took it because he was catching more fish than me!!

3rd...the cost is less than most any other custom rod maker out there, and it is definitely as high quality as any other rod on the market. I'd put it up against any other custom or store-bought rod out there!

I was fighting several large fish (and stingrays) a few weeks ago and I was never concerned with the ability to control where I wanted them to go. It was great. I know there are several fish I would have lost had I been using any of my other setups.

There's my spill...if any of you folks are wanting to buy a custom rod you should really give Billy a call. He's a real class act for one thing, and you will get a rod that you will cherish for years.

Here's an action shot. I need to get a close up of the rod to post also.

Capt. Bob, TX

Ive got a Spiral Stix from BillyStix...
Ive had Loomis / Fenwick & several others..None can Hold a Candle to the Stix..I caught a 45lb Jack last week on it & bulldawg'd it all the way to the boat..Unmatched senitivity & tough as nails Backbone..
Id love to get a few more so my 17yr old daughter could enjoy the unmatched sensitivity of the Stix & we could wade toghter on more occations.
I'll be buy'n an 8 ft med/lt spinning rod this fall..

Billy..

I just wanted to thank you for the great pink rod I had you build for little Addy Young. With a great fisherman and boat builder (Young Boats) for a Dad, she deserved the very best for her very first fishing rod--a BillyStiX. Here's a photo of Addy with her Mom, Dante, and Dad, Robb--and the new rod. She'll really enjoy it as she gets a bit older!

Capt. Tommy Thompson

Gainesville and Steinhatchee

When it comes to fishing rods I have to say that the "SpiralStix" is by far the best idea ever. I have been fortunate enough to have the pleasure of owning another one with "Billys" most recent "At cost" contest. My first one was a gift that I cherish very much, and I can honestly say that I will never fish another rod. The whole system of having spiral wrapped eyes on the blank is just awsome. When I am working my artificials I no longer have that horrible tangle I usually get when the wind is blowing hard. The weight of rod is extremly light and does not wear you out from working it all day. Also, the shorter handle is just wonderful when you are in your kayak. I no longer scrap my side when I am "Walking the Dog" either. The craftsmanship is just wonderful and it feels good to know that my rod is the only one like it. Talking to Billy is just a pleasure as well. Another thing is that when it comes to the kayaker he has thought of everything to accomodate our needs with this rod. If you want a custom built rod, and you want something to be proud of buy a "BillyStix" and you will not regret it.

On October 19 Billy McDaniel (BillyStiX) announced I had won one of his kayak fishing rods. I couldn't believe I had been chosen and called him at my first opportunity. I was under the impression the rod was a kayak rod Billy had already built. First thing I learned in the conversation was that: BILLY WILL NOT MAKE A ROD WITHOUT TALKING TO THE PERSON HE IS BUILDING THAT ROD FOR. This conversation is part small talk but mostly an information gathering process for Billy. He wants to know how you fish, how you intend to use the rod, rod lengh, action you desire or an in depth description of the type and weight baits you use, handle length, thread colors you want, reel you intend to put on the rod......and more. He will listen to your needs and tactfully make suggestions when needed. Do not expect this conversation to take just a couple of minutes either. I was on the phone for over 30 minutes before Billy was satisfied with the information he had. I have watched posts from others with BillyStiX Rods and they all describe the same process. When Billy says "custom rod" that is exactly what he means. I doubt he has ever made two identical rods except when they are both ordered at the same time with the same specs from the same owner. Billy's rods are truly "one of a kind" rods.

I actually received the rod quite quickly in my opinion, but it had somehow been damaged in shipping. Two of the guides were wiped out, but the rod blank was in good shape. The damage was amazing to me because the care he takes in packaging a rod is unreal. The rod is in a heavy plastic protective sleeve, then taped to a 1/2" shedule 80 pvc pipe. Heavy paper wrapping is built up and taped into place at 4 spots down the length of the rod then the whole thing is inserted in a 3" schedule 80 pvc pipe. Couldn't believe it but the damage was done. Called Billy and he never hesitated to say "send it back".

So from October 19th to now the rod has been built, shipped to La Porte, TX, shipped back to FLA, repaired and shipped back to La Porte. This time it was in pristine condition. I knew which guides had been replaced and could not tell the guides had been replaced at all. It was at the house when I got home from work Wednesday.

Now for the good stuff. The rod is beautiful. I specified red thread and didn't care about the thread otherwise. He asked me if it was alright to use gold thread for highlights and that suited me just fine. He has written:

Custom Built For
Hookset
BillyStiX Fishing Team 06

...on the rod. There is a U. S. flag, a Texas flag and a redfish on the rod also. It is 7 feet long with a 7" handle. it feels light as a feather and the spiral wrapped guides seem spaced very nicely. I put a Curado 101d whose ARB spool bearings have been replaced with ceramic hybrid bearings on the rod which makes a very light rig indeed. It's a joy to hold and as others have written about Billy's rods there is a bit of a feeling it might be too pretty to fish with.

BUT I got it to fish. Took a vacation day Friday and took it to the MOB to hunt for flounder. It was COLD wading while the air temp was in the 30's with a brisk breeze. Pretty much knew it would be later in the day when it warmed a little before chances were too good for catching a fish. In the meantime the rod casts like a dream. Good sensitivity and casting distance is excellent. Had no trouble telling that it was crabs mauling my plastic without looking for the confirmation of scissor like damage to the plastic. Caught a 16" red at about 2:15 pm and knew immediately it wasn't a flounder when I felt him. I had to leave @3:30 and time was running out to catch a flounder. Finally caught an 18" flounder @3:00 pm and knew it was a flounder as soon as he touched it. Picked up a 16" flounder right at the rod tip when I felt him mouth the bait just as I was about to pick it up. Had to leave but this rod has become my new favorite.

"Hook"

Thank you, Billy, for building the best feeling, most beautiful rods out there.  Aside from being a joy to cast and fight fish on, the craftsmanship is just AMAZING!!!!!!!!I’m a BILLYSTIX customer for life!!!!

Hi Billy,

I finally got to test the Grouper Rods you made for me in 2006 over Christmas and New year. They performed flawlessly and I am hooked on Spiralstix.  Here is a picture of me with one of the rods, and also a picture of the fish. "Sorry I could not hold the fish up for the photograph"!!!. As you can see it is a Jewfish Grouper,(estimated at 250lb) we had to remove the back gate on the boats stern and 3 people were needed to haul the fish on board, after taking photographs the fish was returned to the Ocean. I was fishing aboard Bill Hauck's party Boat "Sea King" a longtime friend of mine based in Marathon FL. I caught the fish appropriately on Christmas Eve, so that took care of my Christmas present. I was so excited after catching this fish I forgot to take a picture including the spiralstix rods together with the fish, so hence the two separate pictures, we had to take the photograph of me with the rod before we left the dock on another trip. The rods work great especially with the Shimano TLD 20 two speed reels, its a perfect match for the Calstar blank. There was absolutely no tendency for the rod to twist at all, and this fish did put up a hard fight and quite a bend in the rod. Hope you are keeping well, many people on the "Sea King" asked about the Rods.

Man, I just unwrapped my first-ever BillystiX rod. Wow it is freaking unbelievable. With the Army colors and Logo, Team Billystix '07 and my name on it. 6'9" Medium action . I wish I was not at work right now. I will be using it on Sunday thats for sure.

Thanks Billy. I am 100% satisfied.

Mr. McDaniel,

I am really impressed with your phone call today. The more I look at the Rods on your web Sight the more excited I get about my New Rod. It's going to be a long 2 weeks...

I had e-mailed 8 potential Custom Rod builders from the Internet in the past 2 weeks. You were the ONLY Person that has made contact with me.

Thank You for your Kindness and Generousity.

Billy...

I finally got to the coast, Rockport, with my BillystiX. I went fishing with Tombo on the bay where he lives. We were on the water at 6:45 am. There was no wind, looked great. We started looking for Reds as soon as we were on the water. I said: this is going to be a big fish day, wrong. We saw very few, when we saw alot of them we we right on them and they spooked. I had a top water on my Billystix and a plastice on my spinning rod. After a while I said: to hell with it I am going to blind cast. I had the same weight of each rod. There was some old peir pole sticking up and desided to do some comparible casting for as distance. I used the spinning reel first no problem reaching the pole. I said I wonder if the baitcaster on my Billystix would reach the pole. The first cast was a good 30 feet beyond my cast with the spinning reel. I said: that can't be possible, lets do it again. I tried to do the same force on casting on each. The second time the Billystix when about 40-50 feet ahead of the spinning reel. What you state: you will get a longer cast with a Billystix is TRUE.
We fished for about 3 hours and Tombo landed only one red. I finally had my chance I saw a red, said to myself: cast 4 feet ahead of him, don't blow it. I had no time to waist, had to act fast, got in a hurry threw to hard with the Billystix. I tried to pull back and had the biggest.biggest and biggest bird nest I have ever seen
I had a big O.

It was a good day had a good time and I got to see what my Billystix would do.

I am going back to the coast in June.

Billy...

Here's a photo from another successful fishing trip using BillyStiX rods. Young Coleman Lay from Jacksonville caught his first big red with me this summer at Steinhatchee, Florida using a Rapala topwater plug. There's nothing like an 8' BillystiX spinner with a Stradic 2500 and 10# Power Pro to get the long casts needed to catch 'spooky' fish like this one--and to get them to the boat.

I'll be sending this photo with a story to Florida Sportsman Magazine soon!

Here are a couple of photos from the tournament. I love my rod! It was awesome catching my red on my Billystix! Some of the guides were blown away and thought that the spiral was really cool, that they have never seen one before.

I just got my new custom BillyStiX that I won in his little tournament last month and it is one awesome rod. It looks great with lots of color and other custom decals like a trout, my name, a Texas flag and an American flag. I got his Spiral StiX and I was baffled at first by the way the eyes spiral around the rod. After using the rod Saturday and puting it to a good test while catching a few solid fish I am very impressed with Billy's work. I could cast much farther with this rod and the top eyes pointed down kept my line from ever touching the rod blank and seemed to help while fighting fish. I also caught a few bass in the golf course pond and it is very sensitive to boot. I can tell that this is a quality piece of work and If anyone is in the market for a nice rod you should most certainly consider a BillyStiX.

John Walker

Houston, TX

John's Buddy confirms: I can personally vouch for John Walkers's comments regarding his new BillyStiX rod. We fished in the same boat last Saturday and he was able to make every cast at least 20 yards further than the rest of us in the boat. The SpiralStiX rod is a unique design with very nice graphics--I highly recommend it!

It was beauty that had the initial draw to BillyStix rods, but after owning my first the beauty is secondary. My first SpiralStix left me speechless, and if you know me that take some doing. It was almost too pretty to take fishing, but fish with it I did and was blessed to catch a 23 inch multi-dotted red as my first fish. I had only made a few casts with the new rod, but could tell from my first cast that this was just not any rod. It seemed that I was casting further then ever before, and I soon learned that I was. Could a rod cause you to cast further? In the case of the SpiralStix the answer is 100% yes.

As I worked those first few casts, it also seemed that I was felling my bait (Purple/Char Bass Assassin) exceptionally well. I was felling almost every movement the bait was making as I swam it back to the boat. Then it happened, that ever so light tac on the line. So light that I know now had this not been a Stix I was fishing with I would have never felt, but I had and knew immediately that a fish had just picked up my bait.

I quickly struck and was rewarded with a strong bow in my new Stix and line started to peel from my reel. I quickly knew that this was no small fish, but a good red and he was going to give me a great fight. This was by no means the first red I had ever caught and had always enjoyed the tackle straining fights they can produce. This red was no different as he pealed more line from my reel. Again I was not sure if it was just me, or if my drag seemed to be working smoother this crisp morning. I have come to know that my drag was working smoother and it was due to the spiral design of my Stix. Because the line never touches the rod blank during a fight, there is less resistance on the line which allows the drag to work smoother.

I learned what I like the most about my new SpiralStix just moments later as the red came to the boat for the first time. When he saw the boat he made 90 degree turn to the left and started hauling butt, and pealing line. That is when it struck me that my rod was not torqued to the left with the pull of the reds brute force. The reel sat in my left had and there was no press at all felt in what would normally had been a twisting to the left that after a day of fight fish can cause ones wrist to become tired and sore. In fact after this first red, there were a few others as well as a couple of nice trout and flounder to boot. My wrist never had that tired feeling I normally get on a day of fishing and let me tell you that was a great feeling.

What a pleasure it was speaking to you, Billy. You had the answers to my questions before I even had to ask. All I can really add is, if anyone's thinking about getting a rod built by him, go ahead and make the call. He is so willing to take the time and go over all the details and I can tell in his voice that rod building is histrue love! I'm going catching right now!

Thanks again Billy!

Hi Billy!!

To say my wife liked the rod is an understatement!!! She was totally blown away with it. You did an awesome job all the way around. Not only were the colors perfect but so was the design and the flounder was the crowning touch. A true work of art!!
.
We spent the 23rd(our anniversary) fishing and I received the call from my buddy here at the office that the package arrived around mid-morning so I could hardly contain myself waiting to pick it up and give it to her.
Then her trying to get the package open -- a whole 'nother story. You are taking no chances with your rods getting damaged.....!

Many thanks for making this a memorable anniversary!

I ordered a BillyStiX custom rod a while back and it came in the mail today-- It's by far is THE nicest rod Ive ever felt or seen.

I had talked to Billy for 30 mins to let him know what I was looking for and to discuss all the little extras...then I said," Its all yours -- let your imagination fly!

Well, when I got the tube today & opened it.. I was amazed & dazzled by such a wonderfully created piece of craftsmanship & artwork.
If you ever want a custom rod, call Billy.
Im almost tempted to put this rod on the living room wall & leave it there forever.

THANK YOU, BILLY!

The fist time I set the hook on a decent sized fish I was puzzled by the erratic shaking of my new SpiralSti rod. That lasted until I saw the fish jump and madly shake his head trying to spit out the lure. I have never before felt this depth of sensitivity in a fishing rod. At that moment I fell in love with my BillyStix rod! All I can say is "WOW". Compared to my SpiralStix even the best off the shelf rod is just "a stick".

Hi Billy...

...just a short to tell you how much we are enjoying fishing the Texas Coast with our Billy StiX. We teamed them up with Calais Reels and it has proven to be a super combo. We are catching redfish and trout, and having a ball. We will be back in touch-- thinking about a couple spinning rods.

Billy... you've done it again!!! My 19-month-old already knows which rod has priority on my boat. Can't wait to put him on his first trout!!

I did a little rod building 5 years ago when I was at home recovering from spinal surgery and I built a Spiral Rod or "Acid Rod" as they are called on the West Coast, from information I got from Rod Building forums on the Internet.  I wanted trolling rods for my downrigger and built mine on All-Star live bait rod blanks, nothing as nice and pretty as Billy's but it sold me on the Spiral design.  For trolling, downriggers and bottom fishing I don't think there is a better design, you just have to get over the "weird" look; man I cannot tell you how many times people thought it was a 2-piece rod that was put together incorrectly.  I got to the point where I just started telling people that I was drunk when I wrapped the rod.

There is NO twisting of the rod - notice the angle of your "conventional rod" tip and the top guides next time you are hauling up a big sow and you will see how the rod blank its self twist.  And then there is the advantage of having the rods "backbone" on top where it should be according to the natural bend found in all graphite and glass rods.  The rod will not wobble from side to side, you can even hold the rod open palmed, and the line never touches the rod, anywhere.  Use Silicone Carbide rings if its a trolling rod - these rings have LESS drag on the line then even roller guides.

I don't have the time for rod building these days but will take it up again in the future.  One thing my brief trip into the world of custom rod building taught me is that the mass produced rods are basicly just thrown together.  They don't bother to find the "backbone" in a blank before they wrap them, not much thought seems to go in the placement of guides, they use cheap components and things like placement of the reel seat is done to fit the "average" angler, not you personally like you get with a custom rod.

I have been using one of those Live Bait spiral rods for my snapper rod even though the tip is way too light, I will be calling you up soon Billy to get a proper "Acid Wrapped" snapper rod!  I have seen your work and it,s first rate.

Billy...thanks for the rods.

I have used them a couple of trips with just 'dink' trout to show until this past trip. I liked my 6'6", but I dont know if I can ever use it again after my 7 and 7'6"! Oh well, it needs a little rest. It's time to tire out the other 2. Here's a photo of what makes a BillyStiX a BillyStiX.

I think that one of the most important things we over look in fishing is Rod Sensitivity. Sure we all get the fish to bite and catch fish, but how many bites are you getting that you don't feel? If I was a betting man (and I am sometimes) I would say that on average that we don't feel 25-50% of the fish that bite, or when we do feel them they either have the bait too deep or are spitting it out.

Well I'm here to tell you that up to this point in my life I have used rods from about every maker out there. There are some that are more sensitivity than others and I have caught a lot of fish on all of them. What I have learned over the years is that a Spinning Rod tends to be much more sensitive than a Casting Rod. Even rods made by the same manufacturer, their Spinning Rods are just more sensitive than their Casting rods.

Well most of us, especially us trout (speck) fishermen really hate using Spinning tackle. Those Spinning reels cause all kind of problems that Casting reels don't. So we use Casting reels, with less sensitive rods so we don't have to deal with the Spinning reel problems.

Well now I have the answer to all our problems, it is a BillyStix SprialStix casting rod. You get sensitivity out of this rod that you wouldn't believe. Because of its design, these casting rods are just as sensitive as any spinning rod on the market. To prove this point, just last week I was fishing and catching more fish than the other guys with me. But I don't think it was my fishing skills that were putting more fish on my hooks, I think I was feeling more of the fish biting than the other guys. We were all using the same color, fishing out of the same boat with the same type of line. All using Casting tackle, with only one difference I was the only one with a SprialStix. As I put 3 fish in the boat to every one these guys caught between them. The fish were there and they were biting so the only explanation is that I was feeling more bites than the other two guys combined.

You have to try one of these rods, it will make a believer out of you I know it cause I now BELIEVE!

Big Blue!

8-pounds--and change!

Good Morning, Billy

I will attest to the lack of rod twist in those super SprialStix rods. Though I only have a trout rod I found out first hand just how much control you have over a fish last weekend. I had caught a few nice reds on it before, but last Sunday I was messing around and ended up catching a 10+ pound blue cat on mine. The reason I can attest to how well the rod works is the big cat before the one I caught was not a big, but I hooked it on my 6'6" All Star Worm rod and that sucker got me in some trees and broke me off. Well the the big one tried, but even though my SprialStix has a lighter action and it had lighter line I was able to control the fish better. This one wasn't able to get me in the tree the first smaller fish did. I was sold on the SprailStix before this but I keep on proving it to myself over and over. Can't wait till Wednesday when my second one is scheduled to arrive. Heres a pic of that catfish and thanks again Billy for your great rods!

Got my new BillyStix in on Friday and what can I say the man is amazing at his work. Just beautiful and the extra touches he added are truly special! Besides the art work when the reel is atttached the balance and feel is extraordinary!!

I had one made for me (the one with the most pink (LOL)) and one for my oldest daughter. On mine I had just told Billy I wanted my favorite color green on the rod and my daughters favorite colors Pink and Purple and then turned Billy Loose... He then added a special inscription on the rod that is hard to read in the pictures but is exactly the thought I had in mind when ordering the rod. The inscription reads"

My 2 Best Fishing Partners
Brittany & Courtney
Team Flats Brat 06

My daughter's is the one with the most Blue and you should have seen her face light up when she saw it. I now have a fishing partner for life. She is so proud of her new Stix!!! Showing all her friends which is big deal when you are a 14 year old girl, cheerleader, etc...

Now the pressure is on from my youngest daughter for her Stix. She has already started to pick out her colors and designs. So be warned Billy

Thanks again Billy from me and my daughters! The entire experieince of gettting our custom rods could not have been better!!! --or turned out better.

Brittany wanted me to make sure I added a special thanks from her... She loves it!!

These Pictures Are Worth 10,000 Words!

I rushed home yesterday because my wife told me that I had this "long package" in the house.  It was my new 8' flounder rod and man it is a beauty!  Thanks you, thank you, thank you, for my new rod!  I cannot wait to break it in!  Don't know if you did it on purpose, but the last wrap underneath the first guide is at 14" (legal flounder) and the top of the first guide is at 15" (legal trout), and I love it, I love it, I love it!  When I catch my first flounder on it, I'll send you a picture.

Billy, Hi.

My name is Captain Jason Coniglio. I'm a charter captain in Tampa Bay and I do about 18 to 20 charters a month. On one of my recent charters I had a customer using one of your BillyStiX rods on a snook and red excursion. I liked the rod so much that I had to contact you and find out how can I buy a couple?

Thanks!

Capt. Jace

Mr Stix,
I got the rod you made for me yesterday.  That thing is awesome.  It is perfect for the Calcutta 201B I put on it.  I was hoping to send you a few pics of me catching some fish with it today, but the fish were not cooperating.  Go figure.  Anyway I just wanted to let you know that I got it and am more than pleased with it.

Now, if you don't mind I would like to ask you a few questions.
     - what kind of reel seat is that?  That has to be the nicest reel seat I have ever seen.
     - do you make you own cork handles?  That has to be the nicest cork I have seen on ANY rod.  It is way nicer that the cork on my G-Loomis Greenwater rods!!
     - what kind of disk is that between the rear handle and the reel seat?  That is a very nice touch.
     - do you always use an underwrap on double foot guides?

If some of this is your trade secrets, I understand.  I am trying to expand my knowledge of rod building.
Don't be suprised if I call you to order another one.

Thanks again,

No reason to be skeptical about a Billystix. I was at first, I've thrown some very good, expensive rods in my time. I won one last year and it is by far the best rod I have ever used. I just got my second one, and saving up for my third. The spiral design is awesome, the line rifles off the rod and it has improved my casting distance, been easier for me to throw into the wind, and the rods have great sensitivity. They are definately the best rods I have ever used and I will not buy another rod from now on. I really can't imagine anyone not being happy with a Billystix. I almost forgot to mention how beautiful they are.

The only thing I have been disappointed with is that Molly hasn't personally deliverd one yet.

I bought 14 BillyStiX Rods.....

...this Christmas to give away as presents. I think at that time I had more rods than Billy did. I gave one to my pastor, one to Wade Butler the artist, one to each one of my kids and grandkids, one to my Dad, one to one of my best fishing buddies, two to my wife, and two to myself. (I add those to the two I already had and the one my wife already had.) Theres no way I'd deserve a free BillyStix, that would be way too greedy and if I were to get one I donate it to the Texas Lady Anglers in exchange for a membership for my wife and daughter anyway. I have lots of different kinds of rods and enough gear to outfit Bayflats Lodge but I gotta admit, my BillyStix Rods are some of my favorite possessions. They are very durable, they look great, and they fish as good as they look! My whole family went fishin over the New Years weekend and we all caught fish on our new Billy Stix rods. I'll have to get you some pictures Billy. We had a blast.

Well, I got to go fishing today and caught my first fish on my BillyStix Sprialstix rod. Needless to say, after that I am hooked on these rods. Everything he says is 110% true about these rods. They look different but man does it work really nice. Here is a photo of the first fish.

Well Billy, you have outdone yourself, again. We had a little guy down here with a serious blood/liver disorder and one of our buddys let us in on the problem.Of course, first man up to bat was our Billystix. I've been acting as the 'middle-man' since I was lucky enough to win the two rod offer Billy put up for auction and today they came in..Folks, I mean to tell ya, Trevor is gonna have a fit when he sees that rig..It is BEEEYOOOOOTIFUL..Got his name on it, flag, fish....all the bells and whistles..(of course, the rod I won was just as beautiful)..The man is an ARTIST. Think Trevor is gonna have a fantastic CHRISTMAS....This project wound up with about 40M in cash for the family and only the Lord knows how much blood was donated... I've been fishing with Billy's Stix for several years now and never had a moment of dissapointment..YOU DA MAN, Billy... Folks...Whenever there is need....the FIRST guy to step up to the plate with an offer is ALWAYS Billy...and his contribution is always fought over tooth and nail. Your reputation has preceeded you, my Friend... Thanks again, Billy....you got 'dual citizenship' here as far as some grateful Texans are concerned..

I have two billystix.. One that i ordered first, then the second I won at a tournament.. I had Stix make that one custom for me too.. I get longer casting range than any other i have ever used.. Plus it makes fighting fish so much easier.. The rod works for you very well.

Here is a pic of the largest fish so far on my NEW Billystix... This was a 27" Drum caught Yesterday in west bay..... You can also see in the background my first Stix... The Red Hunter... Great rod as well................ I take two rods with me when i go fishing... Now that i have a second billystix.. That is ALL i take with me...

I forgot to mention this, yesterday while fishing I purposely threw into a deadfall to get a natural(LOL) hangup. I pulled on the rod in many different positions, I kept my eye on the line to see how well it stayed in contact with the eyes, regardless of the bend in the rod itself the line stayed in constant contact evenly with all eyes almost to the point of no tip pressure to maximum tip pressure. I would say that is another feather in Billy's cap as to a perfect job of guide placement.

I wonder how many people even think of this? I wouldn't have 6 months ago until I rewraped new guides on and old rod and had to do some reserch on how guide placement was determined.

Excellent job billy and thanks again for a beautiful and what I call a perfectly designed rod.

Dick

I can remember fishing as far back as any of my memoirs. I guess these memoirs start when I was three or four years old. At the time (early 60s) my rod consisted of an ole cane pole. One of these brightest memoirs was when my dad (rest his sole) came home one evening when I was five with a brand new, all shiny Zebco 202 and fiberglass rod. Man I will always remember that day as we quickly headed over to the pond on our small farm to try out my new rod and reel. Well that evening I caught the biggest fish so far a 5 pound bass, and I was so excited. My dad and I spent a lot of time as did my whole family fishing and to this day there are some of my most special memoirs.

Over the years I have many other special memoirs of fishing, from the fish I caught in Hawaii to the bass tournaments I fished while in San Antonio. One of those really special memoirs has to be the first bass tournament I won. Even though it was just a small tournament and first prize was only like $50.00 I had won. It was at this point in my life that I had decided to strive to only use the best fishing tackle that was available. I spent much if not all of my extra money and then some on rods and reels that I thought would help me in my tournament fishing. Being in the USAF at the time, and with a wife and two young kids this fun money was very limited, but I did place in a quite a few of these tournaments and was able to maintain some nice tackle.

Then in 1988 I decided to get out of the military. Part of this reason was in hopes of better pay but mostly it was because of my young family. I just couldn’t bear the thought of being sent away from my wife and kids. It worked out and I was able to get a job here in Houston with a contractor for NASA that has lasted up to today. My wife was also able to get a job with NASA and we for the first time were able to get things not only for ourselves but for the kids that we had only dreamed about.

After moving to Houston I quickly found that my top of the line bass tackle was really not well suited for saltwater fishing. It wasn’t that I was not catching fish as I was able to convert quickly to fish for specks, reds and flounder it was the rods and reels I had used for bass just didn’t last. So you could say I started again in my goal to have the best tackle I could get. Though other than the STAR, I really haven’t fished in many tournaments here, I still had the taste for the very best the tackle world had to offer.

I had decided that the reel I wanted the most was a Calcutta and though we were making pretty good money the price tag on a Calcutta was a bit out of my fun money price range. That is when I started my Calcutta fund, where every evening when I got home from work I took all the change from my pocket and put it in a jug. After about 6 months I was a proud owner of a shiny new Calcutta 100 and that day was almost like the day my dad came home with my first Zebco setup. Man was I proud and excited at the same time, and just couldn’t wait to hit the water.

Its funny how over the years that even though both mine and my wife’s pay have increased my fun money has not that much. I thought over this time that the best fishing rod in could find for specks and the type of fishing I was doing was an All Star Shrimptail Special, with All Star offering free replacement it was even better as I was breaking about one a year, or the eyes seemed to always be breaking. That though started to become a hassle as how do you get one replace at 3am on the morning of a big fishing trip?

My Calcutta fund I have continued over the years and it has really worked out quite well. I now have 3 Calcuttas and have used that money to pay for rods and guided trips including offshore trips and tackle. But in all this time I had never found that one rod that I truly thought of as best. This changed as 6 or 7 months ago I found 2cool and started to read all the helpful information this site has to offer. I quickly became very interested in getting myself a BillyStix rod but my fund jug was almost empty at the time, but new in about six months I would have enough to make my order.

Well as it turned out I gotten very caught up in the family atmosphere of 2cool and the benefits that the folks were setting up for other folks. Billy the great man that he is had put up one of his rods for auction for one of the benefits to send stocking to our troops in Iraq. Well those of you that know me, know that I am a very strong supporter of our troops and before Billy had put the rod for auction, had already taken money from my fund jug and made a donations to this cause. It was a great cause and it didn’t brother me that I would have to wait a little longer to get my own Stix. Well once the Stix came up for auction I did bid on it, only for it to go over what I could spend at the time.

Over the next few weeks another great benefit was started where 2coolers were going to help a family in need have a much brighter Christmas. Man I liked that idea and was will to do as much as possible. Well as y’all know another BillyStix was quickly up for auction and the bidding started. I was in there with my bids, the funds in the jug had grown some and I had planned to add a little to it if needed. That is when Billy made the offer for the first bidder to $350.00 would get a rod, and that there were still others rods for auction. Man let me tell you, it didn’t take me long to jump on the $350.00 bid. Even though it would be more than what I would have spent to just order one rod, it was what I would call a win-win situation for me. I would get my Stix and a family would have a brighter Christmas because of it.

My rod arrived the Thursday before Christmas and I can truly say that one I unwrapped it and pulled it from its packaging it was that day when my dad brought me that Zebco all over again. It is really one special rod and that day will always be at the top of the list of my specially memoirs. I will also very much remember the first red I caught on my Stix, just like I remember the bass I caught on that Zebco. From the time that red was landed I decided I had to have another Stix, but unless I win one it is going to take sometime before the ole funds jug has enough in it for me to make an order.

I do want to say to the 2coolers involved in the that special Christmas benefit and especially to Billy, Thanks for the Memoirs!

The Birth of the BillyStiX and Why Folks Want Them!

There was once this young man named Billy, and he had ideas most folks thought of as silly.
He announced to the crowd, he would make them all proud, and build fishing rods the likes of which no one had ever seen.
His first prototype was a beauty indeed, but folks cried out, "beauty doesn't catch fish! And that's what we all need!" So back to the drawing board Billy went, and he thought, and he worked, until he was spent.
When folks saw the second, they roared with laughter! "Billy!" they cried, "what were you thinking? Have you indeed taken to drinking? The eyes are all crooked, and this is all wrong! This rod won't catch fish! You been hittin' the bong??"
Billy simply retorted "You folks do as you wish, but I'll show you how to catch fish, and the line will never touch the blank! You can take my word to the bank!" When the tournament had begun, everyone scrambled to cast, but Billy casted further then anyone. When the hookup came, you could hear folks exclaim, "Watch that rod, I bet it'll break!"
With anticipation they watched, as he fought his hooked fish. The rod never twisted, the line smooth and tight. Then he opened his palm in the middle of the fight! You could hear a pin drop, as they stared in disbelief. "Oh good it worked" thought Billy, "what a relief!" The rod never faltered, but took all the fight, and Billy then knew, it would all be alright.
When he reeled in his red, I've heard it was said, that the entire town wanted to order a rod right then and there! "It's a strange concept, Billy my boy! But today you have proven, this is no new fangled toy! It's a true fishing rod, one above all others! One of beauty, and functionality, I'll take two for my brothers!"
Word soon spread far and wide, of the rod with the spiral guides, and there are some disbelievers still today. But I'll tell you this, without a doubt, it's worth every penny you pay.
For the young or the old, Billy's rods are pure gold. To own one a treasure, to fish one a pleasure, and the fish will be caught in style. From Florida, to Texas, from California, to the Jersey Shore, you'll not find these fine rods in any store. You must get them straight from Billy, each one made with care, you'll not find a better fishing rod anywhere.
I speak from experience, 'cause I already own one, and that rod has become part of me. At the end of this contest, I hope and I pray, that I'll then own two Billystix, and show them off catching fish in Galveston Bay!

“Billystix Rod survives Hurricane Katrina”

Finally got the pics from my father-in-law and can tell this story. Not as good as coachlaw’s finding his boat after Katrina, but a fairly good story:

My father-in-law has (had) a camp in Shell Beach, Louisiana. It’s been in his family since 1972. Word has it that the camp actually almost floated away during Hurricane Betsy in 1965 save for an oak tree in front of the property that kept it from floating down the bayou.

The week before Katrina hit, my FIL and two of our fishing buddies were down at the camp….unfortunately, I was stuck at work. They got word that the hurricane might come close and decided to cut the trip early. Since the area has consistently been spared from hurricanes, my FIL left the camp almost like normal….except for hauling the boat back to New Orleans as is typical when a hurricane is coming.

Last Christmas, my wife and I bought my FIL a Billystix custom spinning rod. We figured that it would be a good present for many years and fishing trips to come. As I said above, he left the camp like normal which meant that he left all of his rods and tackle there…..including the Billystix.

The eye of Katrina passed directly over his camp and we were relegated to the fact that the camp was gone. This was later confirmed with satellite imagery of the area and some photographs posted by several residents from the area. On the satellite image, we could see part of the roof of the camp….albeit 200+ yards from where it originally stood. The neighbor’s house looked relatively intact from the satellite image but it had moved 300+ yards away.

About a month ago, my FIL and one of our fishing buddies decided to take a trip as they had heard that residents were being allowed to survey their property down there. Unfortunately, I was once again stuck at work. When they arrived, the devastation was as expected…..everything was pretty much leveled.

They were taking pictures of the area and saw the small portion of the camp from the satellite image. It was part of the kitchen…..maybe 150 sq ft from a 1200 ft camp. The small blue section tilted on its side is what remained of FIL's camp (the green-roofed house is the neighbors house).

As they neared the window, a rod was sticking out reel end first……yep, it was the Billystix. The rod was wholly intact and had no distinct damage.

First, the rod survived the hurricane and being underwater for a long period of time…and maybe even more surprising was that nobody took it.

I Finally got the chance to use my new Billystix.. Talk about an awesome rod.. When I first ordered it, Stix talked to me for an hour on the phone so he could figure out exactly what I wanted... The rod is impressive to say the least.. It fit like a glove.. Lightweight and ready for action.

I dont think ive ever seen such good customer service from a rod builder.. Ive owned more types of rods over my life , and BillyStiX is definitely one of the best... You cant beat the rod and the price!

I ordered two more , Both as giveaways for a tourney in Mansfield... Thanks for making a great rod, StiX!

Let me tell you about my new Billystix (Spiralstix). When I set eyes on it at the Southeast Texas gathering, I wanted it right away !! Yessir the old RedXcross man was in love. First of all I have been listening to Billy tell about these amazing rods and It is all TRUE. The detail and setup of this rod plays right into my hands, actually not only my beloved Reds , also Flounder. The balance and detail are phenomenal. The first thing I did when I got home was put my gold chronarch on it and take it for a test run.ha ha .. Man it casts like a dream! I have thrown a FEW rods, And I am here to tell you it is awesome. The line flows very neatly through the 9 guides and casts surprisingly well into a brisk wind.. Billy, I personally am impressed.

Billy!

I LOVE my new rod. I haven't even had a chance to tell you thank you yet.

Folks, Billy made for me a kayak rod. Its a 6' short butted lightweight baitcasting rod especially for fishing from the kayak.

I haven't had a chance to get the yak out yet and really put her through the paces but I have fished with it and caught fish with it (woohoo!). It performs beautifully like all of Billy's rods and will be very handy when sitting in the yak with that short handle.

When I talked to Billy and told him what I wanted I also told him "Dont get me wrong, I have seen several of your rods and they are things of beauty but um, Billy, I like things a little more subtle." Billy said, with a laugh, "uh oh, I dont do subtle well" but to his credit, Billy it's gorgeous!!! This is a very well-built rod and just to my liking. I love the colors and it's not over the top

Thank you so much Billy -- I cant wait for a little warmer weather (its cold here!!) to get the yak out and really try this baby.

Billy,

I just wanted you to know , I bought the rod you donated to our gathering , and I absolutely love it !!!!!!!!! Brian told me about it and I love the work you did on it. Everybody knows I'm the red man here on my side of the state.. Ha ha .. It is awesome. I have already thrown it on my Gold chronarch. LOVE LOVE LOVE IT .. THANKS FOR YOUR WORK

Thanks,

RedXCross Brad Deslatte

Billy, I can't say enough about how impressed I am with the quality of your work.  I just can't see myself fishing with any other stick - and I own 2 high dollar G Loomis rods, a couple of St. Croix, a Crowder and a few Star Rods.  You are right up there with the best! - Better I think!

I'm looking forward to getting the new rods, and hopefully meeting you in person.  Take me up on the invite over here to fish one day.

Billy,

Just a quick note to let you know how successful the 2005 GOFC Fall Tournament was this year. I think one reason for the great turnout was that we purchased two BillyStiX rods as prizes for the inshore and offshore awards. There was very little talk about the monetary prizes--everyone was fishing hard to win the rods, which we used as prizes for the largest aggregate catch of one red and one trout or one grouper and one mackerel.

It just goes to show that money isn't everything--at least in the eyes of GOFC fishermen. They wanted those BillyStiX rods!

Hi, Billy,

I broke in my new SpiralStiX rod this Saturday. Despite some pretty nasty thunderstorms I used the new rod to land some redfish in the 4-5 lb. range. The awesome casting improvement is really something I had to see to believe, but everything you said about the spiral rods is true. The rod is beautiful. The colors are just as I imagined they would be. Thanks a million for a job well done.

Billy Harrell, Richmond Hill, GA

This is truly my favorite rod. Not only did I get to pick my favorite colors, but I think it's my lucky rod, too. I've been catching reds left and right every weekend when I go fishing. It must be the sensitivity that makes the difference. Best of all I can really make long casts. When that big red hits, I know my BillyStiX rod can handle the job!!

Sandy Kroeger, Hitchcock, TX

I caught my 42" bull red on Friday July 29th at about 1:00 pm .My heart raced when my BillyStiX that I was holding showed me how sensitive it was as I felt a slight tug then it went to an all out fight for 30 mins .I can't tell  everyone how much I really enjoy and love my two Billystix rods. Well I guess I can (I really love my BillyStiX rods!) I bought myself and my ex-girlfriend Valerie two StiX rods each right before Christmas last year and we both love them. I talked to her a few days ago and she told me she has been catching lots of bass with hers and they are her faverite rods ( She'd better tell me that !) But really--thanks, Billy, because we do love them.

P.S. Here is a pic of me as I was fighting the RED!

Yeeeee.....haaaaaa!!!

Was walking out of the clinic an hour ago when the receptionist said, " Did you get that big tube I leaned up against the wall in your office?"

I didn't even reply, probably because I was running back to my office.

Man, what a rod! It feels just like what I envisioned. Light and manageable with excellent balance, superb looks, and great craftsmanship. You did it, Billy.

I hustled on home, put the Shimano Calais on it, and went out and did some make-believe casting in the front yard. Then it tried it with a matching shiny blue and silver Abu Garcia 4600 that I upgraded to a C5. I think the 4600 is going to win out. Not only does it look great, it feels like a feather on the retrieve.

There's only one problem. What the *%^$#$ am I going to do with all my other rods?

Blue, Trenton, TX

Another very happy customer with her SECOND BILLYSTIX ROD!!!

THANKS, BILLY-- and the T-shirt is awesome, too...! I'm telling you folks that this guy does CUSTOM all the way...and the service can't be beat!

Just got back from the Keys. The mangrove snapper were spawning and we got our limit every night 3 to 4 miles offshore. All were 3 to 5 pounders. Also caught several bonnet head sharks and 16 dorado weighing from 14 to 50 pounds. However, the highlight of the trip was when my 12-year old caught a 4-foot, 40# barracuda. It took him 45 minutes to land it from our condo's dock. The sad part was that while he was fighting the fish one of the spectators backed into the BillyStiX rod. My poor son was crying when he should have been overjoyed as all he could think about was the broken rod. I told him not to worry--just show me the fish. Imagine that rod whipping a big 'cuda and then getting broken by some 250# woman's backside! I just doesn't seem fair!

Billy,

You may not remember me, but you made me a rod 6 months ago or so. My name is Jack Hays, from St. Augustine. I sent you photos of the Shimano Stella that I fish with and you matched the colors of the rod to match it. It's awesome! I can't thank you enough for such a nice rod. I've always fished with G. Loomis rods, but have to say that your product is just as good!

Billy,

Finally had the chance yesterday to use the spiral rod that you built, and let me tell you, it is the best thing since fishing was founded. I had the light-to-medium hooked up on some light fish and then the 5 to 6-foot sharks set in and we even had fun with them for a while. Thanks again for building me such a wonderful piece of ART!!

I don't own one of your rods, but saw one while walking the flats near Bonita Springs this past winter and asked the guy using it who made it. He let make a couple of casts and I was really impressed. I had seen the spiral wraps before, but the spiral wraps on this rod were outstanding. As I was trying the rod out I nailed a 20" trout, and the feel was great. I gave the guy his rod back and gave him the fish for allowing me to try it. The rod I used would be perfect on the striped bass and trout I catch up here in south Jersey!

This was a great note from a young fisherman!

" One day I was in Cedar Key. My dad and I were troling and I cought a 14 pound grouper with a Billy Stix rod. My Dad said another pole would break. I love the pole. Your the best Billy.

Thank You!

Matthew "

Billy...

I have been fishing both the spiral wrap and spinning rods that you built for me for several months now and they have become my main arsenal for trout and reds. When I pick up one of my All Star or other rods I quickly notice the diffrence in feel and castability. We have been catching trout under the causway lights for about three trips now... 200 plus a night is the norm with many in the 18 to 22 inch range all on glow soft plastics and I have been using your spinner exclusively, I am using 10 pound mono with 1/8 oz. jig heads and the extra sensitivity has been a real asset with the light biting in a flowing current.

I'm Sold!

Casts like a dream and looks absolutely superb.

I'ts exactly what I wanted.

Much less effort for more distance = much more accuracy.

Hooked a small one on it's third cast even when the water was like pea soup. It gets me right to the edge of the lilies every cast.

I'm very, very, very pleased!

He's not kidding lads.

Just got it, just tried it.

It's a Rolls Royce with all the extras.

It sounds strange I know, but it casts so smoothly, and further.

Don't ask me how it works. It just does.

A Fan in London, England!

Billy...

I just wanted to let you know how happy I am with the grouper rod you built for me. I've been fishing quite a bit and have caught a lot of fish with it. I am recommending your rods to the people I fish with.

Bill Blair

Gainesville, FL

Awesome rod, Billy!

If it performs like it is supposed to, I will be ordering another as soon as I can sell my other rods or have a spare $200 that needs a good home (LOL!). I'm glad I waited for a custom rod--the one you built is EXACTLY what I wanted. Its weight makes it the lightest rod I now have.

If anyone in the Corpus Christi area wants to see one of your rods, I'd be happy to show them mine.

Now I understand all the excitement about BillyStiX rods!

I have been fishing with two BillyStiX rods for about four months now. One is a 7-foot medium action spinner and the other is a 7- foot spiral wrapped casting rod built for chunking plastics. Both rods have performed well, but the spiral rod is the best casting and most sensitive rod that I have ever casted! The action is just right and once you get over the feeling that you are chunking a weird upside down rod you realize you are casting further than before and feeling light pick-ups better. Spiral guide rods seem to be more comfortable when you have a big red near the boat and he decides to dive under it to make another run. Any TEAM OSO members are welcome to try either of my BillySti if you like...But you will find yourself calling Billy with your order if you try them.

Billy...

I love the new 'lid'!

I wore it into Bass Pro the other day when I took my beautiful new BillyStiX in for just the right reel. It caused quite a commotion! Over a dozen people handled that baby--everyone from the front check-in, the fishing department, the clothing section, the check-out counter and even in the parking lot.

You can expect a call from one of the sales supervisors--he called me aside to get one of your cards. He didn't want his boss to know how much he admired your work. With all those rods to chose from in his own store--he wants a BillyStiX!

Hi, Billy...

I just wanted to thank your for making my rod. I got it and my eyes nearly popped out! What a piece of art. Now I have to buy a new reel to match it--can't put an old one one it. At least that's the excuse I tell Wifie!

You have a very special talent and it shows on my rod. I'm waiting to get to the water to try out the rod and will give you an update on the big trout I plan to catch with my new secret weapon.

Again, thank you!

Hi, Billy…

I now have a total of three BillyStiX rods, my last being a SpiralStiX. I have been bass fishing for a little over 20 years and I have owned a fair number of ‘quality’ bass rods. But, after talking with you, and having you build me two custom BillyStiX spiral rods, I truly have had an total change in attitude towards bass fishing. I’m ‘kinda’ spoiled at this time!

Here’s an interesting
